Public bug reported: Hi,
I know I should stop using a system as slow as Ubuntu in my computer, but I still do. The problem is that when you try to launch Totem from Nautilus by double clicking on a file and that no window is opened in the next minute, you’re no longer sure whether or not the system noted that you double-clicked and thus you retry double-clicking. Then after a while two Totem windows launch… but no one of them responding, whatever the time you wait for them. After killing them all, restarting one and patiently waiting the full time for a Totem window to be fully ready, it worked again. I’m sorry for the pitch of this bug-report, but I strongly have the feeling that no one cares about (no so) old computers and assumed that every launch of a program will be atomic (in the distributed sense: the execution of the program will be atomic from the moment it starts to the moment everything has been loaded)… but that’s clearly not the case, especially running Ubuntu on a laptop aging more than 3 years. And thus (I guess), parallel executions of the same program break some assumptions of the code. I know I should remove Ubuntu from my laptop to switch to something more serious, but while I don’t I get similar errors from various programs. I think this particular is the first time I report for Totem, however. Hoping that Apport’s collected information may be useful, Yours sincerely, Martin. P.S.: I’m really sorry for the general mood of this message, but I used to think Ubuntu and all its softwares were the best programs ever… and I got disillusioned as soon as my laptop wasn’t the cutting edge one. ☹ ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: totem 3.4.3-0ubuntu5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-40.62-generic 3.5.7.20 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-40-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu12 Architecture: amd64 CheckboxSubmission: 01a18e0a74cbde3d34a62f62830ed079 CheckboxSystem: f134069bba098730d27f59b402920826 Date: Sat Aug 31 01:49:16 2013 InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-01-31 (577 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release amd64 (20111012) MarkForUpload: True SourcePackage: totem UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to quantal on 2012-09-30 (334 days ago) ** Affects: totem (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug quantal running-unity ** Summary changed: - Totem is unable to open a window in less than a minute. + Totem’s interface unable to launch. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to totem in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1219121 Title: Totem’s interface unable to launch.
