Might be worth noting that this is a dual-boot system with Win8. The GRUB start-up screen comes up reliably but when the laptop has no monitor connected the default boot into Ubuntu fails with a perpetual blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the laptop screen. When the monitor is plugged in, both the monitor and the laptop screen behave normally at startup, but will fail after a short time.

Switching to kernel xxx.19, which came on the installation .iso is also unstable. Sometimes plugging in an external monitor will produce a temporarily stable video, but within 10 minutes the system degrades to instability. Unplugging the monitor will usually bring the laptop screen back to life, but again only temporarily. I don't have enough Internet bandwidth to do kernel bisections, but will be happy to pursue this if needed.
