With Lucid close to end-of-life, this bug is now ancient history and
should probably be retired. I've not had this problem on Ubuntu 12.04.

Title:
HP Officejet 5610 printout mode options ignored

Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: cups

Ever since I installed Ubuntu 7.04, my HP Officejet 5610 does not
print in full black unless I set the printout mode options to "600
dpi, color, black + color cartridge". I set the default options in
CUPS to this setting. If I don't do this, I get a 80-90% grey, which
looks like I need to replace the black cartridge. The workaround was
successful in Feisty, Gutsy and Hardy.

Now that I've moved to 10.04, I've discovered that most programs will
not make use of this option. They print out in dark grey instead of
black, which does not look very professional.

There are three exceptions that I've found: OpenOffice.org, MSWord
2000 through Wine, and Scribus. All these programs use their own
printer dialogues instead of the standard one used by the other
programs I've tested (geany, gedit, Firefox, Tomboy notes, evince).

I booted up a 9.10 live CD and found the same problem there.

If I choose "print test page" in CUPS, it prints correctly in full
  black.

There's an error message in cups.log (attached) which I think is
irrelevant to this report. It happened when I was trying to
  reconfigure something and it crashed.
