Interestingly, after testing a 3.8.1 kernel, my backlight finally seems
to be working correctly again. I can't be sure exactly which kernel
version may have fixed the problem, but it was most likely something
during the 3.8 development cycle.

Title:
Display brightness is stuck at lowest setting on GeForce Go 7900 GS

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Fedora:

Bug description:
I have a Dell XPS M1710 with a GeForce Go 7900 GS and freshly-
installed, fully up-to-date Ubuntu 12.10 amd64. When using Nouveau
(the default), it is impossible to adjust the display brightness.
Moving the slider in Brightness and Lock has no effect on the actual
display brightness. The Fn keys for brightness also have no effect
(except to move the slider). Worse, even though the default slider
position is the max, the actual brightness is the lowest-possible
setting, making the machine effectively unusable with Nouveau.

The proprietary NVIDIA drivers do work (and are active at the time of
reporting this). I am happy to provide more info if needed.
