I can't reproduce this in Ubuntu 12.10. I'm inclined to think this was
actually a bug in the font (DejaVu Sans Mono) and not in Firefox itself

Scroll down to "Combining characters". The accents will appear to the
right of the characters they're meant to appear directly over.
I'm running firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.4-0ubuntu6.06 on Ubuntu Dapper.
