I upgraded to 3.2.0-34-generic and the slow off-screen rendering problem is no longer occurring on my Thinkpad X220. Performance is normal. I haven't tried it on the ASUS yet.

When I switch to Precise, it runs so slowly on machines with Intel integrated graphics that it's unusable. But it's fine on machines that use non-Intel graphics (I tried a Dell Optiplex 755 with an ATI RV610 card, which under Precise uses the Gallium 0.4 driver.) I'm reporting this bug using an ASUS Eee PC 1015 netbook; with Precise it uses the Intel IGD driver. I'm seeing the same problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad X220, which uses the Intel Sandybridge Mobile driver. To try to quantify the performance hit, I ran glxgears on the ASUS. Under Lucid it reports 300 fps. Under Precise the same machine is getting 59 fps. That's a 5x slowdown. The Lenovo is getting 60 fps under Precise. One more piece of info: my application runs fine on the ASUS and Lenovo machines when I don't request off-screen rendering. If I'm only rendering to the display, I can pan and zoom around in my virtual world quickly and smoothly. But as soon as my robot client connects and starts requesting off-screen rendering (simulated images for the robot's camera), the performance falls apart and the application becomes unusable. If I kill the client, which disables off-screen rendering, performance returns to normal.
