In nautilus 3.x i had the same problem especially with the thumbnails of
music folders. I found a solution using dconf-editor and puting the
value of icon-size to 126 in state of 64 (org/gnome/nautilus/icon-view).

I hope this can help : i have almost no space left betwwen my icons
(thumbnails) and i love it ;-)

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

there's apparently no way to reduce the space between icons
(especially useful when you zoom your folder). I have music folder,
and when you zoom, the left-right gat between two icons is too big,
I'd like to find a way to reduce it si i can view more icons in the
  window.

  Thanks for helping me !

I'm using last version of nautilus package, with lucid lynx...
