I'm experiencing this same problem now in Ubuntu 12.10.

Title:
EOG do crash xserver session when opening image

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I don't know where is the problem :( I read Xorg.0.log, but nothing
interesting in. When opening image with eog (image shoot with nokia
n9 phone) the Xserver crashed. When open image with gimp, everything
is normal. I atached one of the problematic images, after make
corections to file with gimp (because in image have personal things)
  still crashed the session.
