Ok, GNOME3 was not the cause, still had the problem after removing.
Went back and determined things changed since installing 12.10
distribution.  Found that the real cause is the theme you are using.  If
you set Adwaita or High Contrast or High Contrast Inverse the Data Table
banner looses it's close and max/min options.  The Ambiance and Radiance
work fine.

  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Adding addition data points to a presentation chart failed.  The
  LibreOffice-calc Data Table opened, added the new row but can't close
  the table.  The application appears to be stuck inputing the new
  information.

  Uninstalled libreoffice-gtk, no change. libreoffice-gtk3 was not
  installed. Reproducible with

  WORKAROUND: Secondary click and select close.
