Recently (the last few weeks) a desktop here has been hanging in the
middle of the night.  The last thing in syslog before the hang is "NVRM:
Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0001"   This is on lucid.

  Doing nothing special, my display flickered and those messages
  appeared in the log files:
