This looks to be resolved somehow. It is still slow but much better than the
3.0.0-15 kernel.
Current kernel 3.0.0-26-generic

Title:
SDL+Pulseaudio drain CPU after upgrade to 3.0.0-15 kernel

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I am running xubuntu 11.10 on a IBM ThinkPad T40.
  pulseaudio: 1:1.0-0ubuntu3.1

Recently my system upgraded to kernel 3.0.0-15-generic and since then
I am not able to run Oricutron, an emulator of an old 8-bit machine
(Oric). The main sympton is that Oricutron got extremely slow and and
pulseaudio claims almost 50% of the CPU running at 100%. Oricutron is
using SDL (version 1.2 installed on my machine). I am almost convinced
that this problem can be reproduced using every SDL based program. I
tried xpilot (an SDL based game) with the previous (3.0.0-14) and the
current kernel version and I think it was skipping frames when run
  under the current version.
