Have you reproduced this with the upstream version? Are you sure that this is not related to the libindicator patching of the Unity version of nm-applet?

Create or Rename a wired network to have an extra long name. 2. Remove lan cable. 3. Open the network manager applet 4. Plug in lan cable while applet is open. You should now see that the name continues of the side of the screen. What should happen: The applet should be resized to fit the text. Note: The applet is resized if you close it and open it again. Just not if you have it open when the network it connected.
