Ok, so this happens only when VM Player is running with an active VM in
the foreground. The Ubuntu screen saver kicks in but after I move my
mouse, the screens aren't locked.

  After coming out of suspend, the active desktop gets displayed with
  all the open apps, files, etc. Then, after like two seconds, the
  screen gets faded to black and then is the password prompt displayed.
