Title:
Unity does not start up when I log in

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
When I recently logged into Ubuntu, I noticed that the Unity launcher
and panel did not appear at all and only my wallpaper and my desktop
icons were visible on screen. Thanks to the fact that I had nautilus-
open-terminal installed, I managed to fire up a terminal window.
However, the title bar was missing from the window and the window was
neither resizable nor movable (aka gtk-window-decorator was not
running). Entering "compiz --replace &" or "unity --replace &",
however, made everything go back to normal.

I also had the same issue with Unity 2D: The launcher didn't start up,
gtk-window-decorator wasn't running, but the panel was pretty much
  usable.

Googling for the specific issue didn't help either. All search results
that came up recommended one of the following:

  - "unity --reset" or "unity --reset-icons"
  - Remove all config files related to Compiz and Unity
  - Check if Unity is supported by my system using unity_support_test (it
passes all tests with flying colours)
  - sudo aptitude reinstall compiz, unity...
  etc.

However, none of the aforementioned recommendations worked. A
workaround that I have found is to force Unity to start up using
  gnome-session-properties.

EDIT: If I start a terminal window after logging in and run top, I see
no processes related to Compiz or Unity, which indicates that either
an abnormal termination occurs (which seems a bit unlikely, since they
always run successfully if I start them up manually) or that they
  don't start up at all.
