@Kushal
This is happening because eog uncritically assumes filetype from filename. Most
other modern image viewers look inside the image file to figure out what kind
of image it is, which is why they do not have this bug.

Title:
Could not open certain PNG images
Status in “eog” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Binary package hint: eog
Fails to open certain PNG images, and worst is the case as Ubuntu's
default wallpaper i.e. 'warty-final-ubuntu.png' is itself impossible
to open. The image viewer doesn't crash but displays red strip that
says "Could not load image '<file name>'. Fatal error reading PNG
image file: Not a PNG file" and strip has Retry button which is when
clicked, doesn't open the image but all it does is the red error strip
is removed. Note that Shotwell (another default option to open and
view images) opens the same file perfectly.
