I got it to run - I'm expecting a couple of hung nfs mounts were the
cause of the problems.

I have tried to run apport (and apport-collect on a specific bug) -
both stall when running the collector. It's now been running for
approx. 30 minutes - still not done (don't think it will ever be).
I've tried running it as my user - and using sudo - same result.
an strace -p after it has run ten minutes gives this output, which is
repeated again and again:
