Please mention the version of Ubuntu you are using.
Did sound used to work in earlier versions of Ubuntu/ Other Linux distros ?
Please tell us the output of the command 'lspci -nn' or give some detail about
the sound hardware you have.
Goto System -> Preference -> Hardware information, then click on 'Ubuntu Device
Database' button. It will add your hardware information to the Ubuntu database.
