I confirm the same symptoms and I'm wondering whether the problem lies deeper: I have been trying the setup an icecast2 server all evening to stream audio from the line-in of my soundcard and although no errors were reported no sound was heard from windows' winamp. The icecast2 daemon itself runs fine as well as the two programs (darkice and ices2) I have used to capture from the line-in and send to the icecast2 server.
Also, can use arecord and aplay just fine and as suggested above a file saved using save as... plays normal.
