Yes. I think it's very worth mentioning. I think that what you are
experiencing now should be a new bug. I'd like to reserve this one for
the fact that ESD did not automatically get installed and caused a
crash. So, please file a new bug for what you are now experiencing and
then leave the bug number in a comment on this bug. I'm going to modify
this bug to focus on that issue.
Also, I do know that Kontact (Kmail) works fine in a computer with no
sound system (I have one of those too).

For the last week or so I have been unable to use Evolution. It takes an
age to load (5 mins plus), and once it is loaded the window is blank and
unresponsive. I have had Synaptic install updates every day but so far
none have solved the problem. Evolution is configured to use two imap
accounts (both of which are currently accessible). When running from a
terminal, I see the following:
