I think this would be a good idea. With iPods and external hard/thumb drives we get an icon on the desktop among other things to let us know that they were detected and mounted without error. With webcams and other USB devices, we don't get any status update or anything. Just have to check Ekiga or some other video capture program to see if it's working correctly.
A nice little icon in the status bar for detecting new USB device maybe?
