Feisty's driver manager for e.g. the NVidia drivers is really good stuff! Well done!Similarly great work on the auto-downloader of codecs for non-supported media (e.g. mp3 etc) How about extending this functionality to cover hardware people plug in: e.g. use case: User plugs in a webcam supported (or not!) by linux: Window should pop up, saying something like: 'You've plugged in a {brand} Webcam, we're searching for known linux drivers...' and offer a click and play driver install if the driver exists / is supported. If not, say - sorry but no known driver exists for this hardware on Linux. Currently, hardware support in Ubuntu is good, but especially for webcams it relies a lot on users downloading and compiling their own stuff from a host of sources: way outside of 'average users' skills(?) and certainly within the possibilities of Ubuntu to automate! Also - instead of users going to developers' personal homepages to download, it would be great to include these drivers on the Ubuntu universe server or similar References: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsMultimediaWebCameras ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs Status: Unconfirmed -- Wishlist: Drivers for more webcams/hardware + auto-suggest driver for attached hardware https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105221 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
