I also have exactly the same problem with a 'SAMSUNG_CDRW/DVD_SM_308B'. My IDE controller is a '82801BA IDE U100' according to device manager, if this is of relevance. I tried a second drive earlier and this also failed in what seemed to be an identical manner, however I no longer have access to this drive to get any more information about it.
