Hi again, I re-ran the test and it turns out that totem-video-thumbnailer is now able to extract the cover correctly:
GST_DEBUG='*:3' /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer -v "song.m4a" test.png TotemVideoThumbnailer-Message: ... Checking whether file has cover TotemVideoThumbnailer-Message: ... Saving cover image to test.png The output PNG is generated without errors. I'm not sure why it previously failed, it might have been a temporary issue on my system or a mistake on my side when running the command. In any case, the thumbnailer works manually, but Nautilus still does not show the embedded cover art for .m4a files, while .mp3 thumbnails work normally. So the underlying issue remains: GNOME/Nautilus does not display thumbnails for .m4a with embedded artwork, even though the thumbnailer can extract the cover.
