I have the same or similar problem. I am using a Toshiba Satellite 105 with Atheros AR5005 wireless chip installed.
When I setup WPA on, I show the IP of the provider as being accessed, but now I am unable to use ANY browser. With WPA encryption on I get a "URL not found" error. I have used the various programs in the 3 versions of Ubuntu I have installed and get the same problem. When encryption is ON, I can no longer access the Internet. I have also used "iwconfig ath0 enc s:password" and can set the password. Next "iwconfig" will show the encryption ON, but once again I am unable to access the Internet. I have used Static settings for my local WIFI portal and I can never get access to the Internet, once encryption is ON, regardless of which program or routine I use.
