I'm experiencing something similar with my 2G iPod Nano. On plug in it proceeds to mount the storage on /media/IPOD_LABEL , but also tries to get the embedded (encripted) OS volume mounted onto the same exact spot. That produces two icons on my Xfce 4.4 desktop (one 'IPOD_LABEL' and one 'Apple iPod Music Player'), and additionally an error dialog informing me of a failed mount operation. And although this is not the same matter I should probably mention that there is no way to eject the little beast from within the graphical interface, only unmounting it is possible.
