I don't think those exist; you typically want an iGPU for the low power
consumption.
But, if they did exist they'd be rare enough for us to be unable to find anyone
to verify the test plan.
In any case a laptop would trace all the same code-paths a desktop would, as
there's no special handling of laptops (anymore).

never logged in before, or have never made a choice.

No, changing the default will also affect users who have already logged
in, regardless of whether they ever made a choice or not.

> What if I have an affected system, but have opted in to use Wayland,
will this SRU change my choice and revert that to Xorg?

There are four possible situations here:
1. Laptop originally defaulted to Xorg, then the kernel 6.8 update changed the
default to Wayland
-> the fix will revert you back to Xorg
2. Laptop originally defaulted to Xorg, then you opted-in-to Wayland, then the
kernel 6.8 update changed the default to Wayland but you didn't notice as you
already were using Wayland:
-> the fix will revert you back to Xorg
3. Laptop originally defaulted to Wayland (as far as we know that has only
happened if installing with 22.04.5 or 24.04 which have kernel 6.8)
-> the fix will revert you back to Xorg
4. Laptop is unaffected, it originally defaulted to Xorg, updating to kernel
6.8 did not matter, and is still defaulting to Xorg
-> the fix will not change the default, so you will keep your preference

While all cases 1~3 change the current behavior, I only see case n.2 as
changing the user *choice*.
But we cannot do anything about it now because on an affected system there is
no indication of whether the user is currently on Wayland because they chose to
or because it is the default.

re: e)

We are choosing to default to Xorg mainly because all certified laptops
shipped with Xorg. And while the OEM team might be open to re-evaluating
Wayland in an existing LTS, that should only happen after testing (and
possibly re-certifying?) and not because of a sudden bug.

====================

I will later edit the bug description addressing your points.
