It's definitely grey on dark grey. There is no black.

Certainly viewing a screen in the sun will make it harder to see. But at
least when indoors it should be visible as grey on dark grey. In more
recent releases (24.04 maybe but definitely 24.10), it became a lighter
grey on dark grey so that makes it easier to see.

If your monitor has gamma or contrast settings then try adjusting those.
If there are no such settings then I'm not sure what the course of
action would be without access to a colour calibration device to correct
the display. Maybe a simpler solution is to install 24.04 instead of
22.04, or even consider changing the shell theme.
