Public bug reported: Sometimes when I plug in an external monitor (HDMI cable), my gnome session crashes. I'm sent to the login screen and when I log in none of the stuff I had open is open any more. The expected behavior is that plugging in a monitor does not crash the session. This doesn't happen every time, but it has happened repeatedly.
Ubuntu version 24.04: ``` $ lsb_release -rd No LSB modules are available. Description: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Release: 24.04 ``` gnome-shell version 46.0: ``` $ apt-cache policy gnome-shell gnome-shell: Installed: 46.0-0ubuntu5.1 Candidate: 46.0-0ubuntu5.1 Version table: *** 46.0-0ubuntu5.1 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble-updates/main amd64 Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble-security/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 46.0-0ubuntu5 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble/main amd64 Packages ``` I've attached the bit of `journalctl` output from the time of the crash I experienced just now. I think the relevant bit is at 11:02:21: ``` Jun 09 11:02:21 codon gnome-shell[2577]: libmutter:ERROR:../src/core/window.c:5869:meta_window_get_work_area_for_logical_monitor: assertion failed: (logical_monitor) Jun 09 11:02:21 codon gnome-shell[2577]: Bail out! libmutter:ERROR:../src/core/window.c:5869:meta_window_get_work_area_for_logical_monitor: assertion failed: (logical_monitor) Jun 09 11:02:21 codon gnome-shell[2577]: GNOME Shell crashed with signal 6 Jun 09 11:02:21 codon gnome-shell[2577]: == Stack trace for context 0x5567a8dc4a80 == Jun 09 11:02:21 codon gnome-shell[2577]: #0 7ffcea87e760 b file:///usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/tiling-assist...@ubuntu.com/src/extension/moveHandler.js:503 (3452cfd55790 @ 454) Jun 09 11:02:21 codon gnome-shell[2577]: #1 7ffcea87ef80 b file:///usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/tiling-assist...@ubuntu.com/src/extension/moveHandler.js:391 (3452cfd55d80 @ 1833) Jun 09 11:02:21 codon gnome-shell[2577]: #2 5567a8e8bc28 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/init.js:21 (10a1b8c70bf0 @ 48) Jun 09 11:02:22 codon systemd[2273]: Starting update-notifier-crash.service - Notification regarding a crash report...
