Public bug reported:

Sometimes when I plug in an external monitor (HDMI cable), my gnome
session crashes. I'm sent to the login screen and when I log in none of
the stuff I had open is open any more. The expected behavior is that
plugging in a monitor does not crash the session. This doesn't happen
every time, but it has happened repeatedly.

Ubuntu version 24.04:
```
$ lsb_release -rd
gnome-shell version 46.0:
```
$ apt-cache policy gnome-shell

I've attached the bit of `journalctl` output from the time of the crash I
experienced just now. I think the relevant bit is at 11:02:21:
