Sounds plausible. Strange thing is that in the mean time I upgraded to 1:2.0.0+beta6-1ubuntu4. The problem was still there: I occasionally got a crash-report after I logged in to Gnome. Then I tried to reproduce what you said in your post; I closed gaim (choosing Quit from the menu) before I logged off and since then the problem has disappeared. Maybe by closing Gaim by hand once, it solved the problem.
