The method stated in the documentation isn't new at all.

Apart from that, here you have an example of actual usage of the
/usr/share/gdm/greeter/autostart/ folder in the gdm3 package itself:

Obviously, that part of gdm3 is also not working in Ubuntu 23.04, and
that's not an opinion but a bug.

Or maybe the documentation is just wrong and/or outdated.
