I have the same problem on a Samsung X10 laptop. I could not do a fresh install becuase the alternative installer could not mount the cdrom despite booting from it to begin with. After an online upgrade from Edgy I now have a phantom cdrom icon on the desktop and no access to the real one. A bit of searching reveals that this is a common problem with Feisty.
