this is happened for me on 21.10 and I just upgraded to the development release of 22.04 and it was still happening.
version 41.2-1 the spinner would just sit there spinning on a search. strace of gnome-software showed it doing nothing really. I sent a TERM signal to the gnome-software process and restarted it, and search is working fine now nothing seems very relevant in the systemd journal: Jan 17 22:08:01 dogen gnome-software[3719]: plugin fwupd took 3.3 seconds to do setup Jan 17 22:08:03 dogen gnome-software[3719]: plugin appstream took 1.9 seconds to do setup Jan 17 22:08:03 dogen gnome-software[3719]: enabled plugins: fwupd, os-release, packagekit-refine-repos, packagekit-refresh, snap, appstream, flatpak, hardcoded-blocklist, hardcoded-popular, modalias, packagekit, rewrite-resource, provenance, systemd-updates, generic-updates, provenance-license, icons Jan 17 22:08:03 dogen gnome-software[3719]: disabled plugins: dpkg, dummy, repos, malcontent Jan 17 22:08:03 dogen gnome-software[3719]: not handling error failed for action get-updates-historical: failed to build result for c82980cd3fe66f7d0a8bb83b353cbc271177efd4 Jan 17 22:08:03 dogen gnome-software[3719]: not handling error failed for action refresh: E: Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jammy/InRelease E: Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jammy-updates/InRelease E: Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jammy-backports/InRelease E: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jammy-security/InRelease E: Failed to fetch https://packages.riot.im/debian/dists/default/InRelease E: Some index files failed to download.
