Thanks. It sounds like your gnome-shell process has crashed or frozen. When that happens you might be able to interact with apps still as those run through Xorg which has probably not crashed... Next time it happens, please:
1. Wait 10 seconds. 2. Reboot. 3. Run: journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt 4. Attach the resulting text file here. 5.
