I installed the mutter libraries from focal proposed as described in #15 and the issue seems to be fixed. Also copied my ~/.config/monitors.xml to /var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml and was able to get the same monitor configuration working at the login screen. So this is verified and finally works as it used to work in 18.04.
