Maybe I meant 'desktop-icons' and not 'ubuntu-dock' in the above. Anyway, here is a stack trace of the popup menu positioning in the Ubuntu case. It starts in the right place on the desktop and then gets immediately repositioned to the Terminal window's cursor:
