Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center
Gnome-control-centers mixes both user-level preferences with system- preferences. This is not a wish-list sort of thing, its a bug. The user doesn't know which applets change personal-preferences and which change system-wide- settings. They really should be two separate applets. Other minor issues with it: - it makes the system menu pretty much obsolete. (i'll came back to this) - it uses spatial mode, which is inconsistent with nautilus and other desktop apps. - now that stuff is already categorized by the control-center, those applets contain tabs, should really be split into separate applets. Consistency, remember? - all stuff in 'system tools' like gconf-editor should be in the control center as well // OFFTOPIC // As to the system-menu being pretty obsolete. Rethinking the menu is smart move anyway. I would vote for a 'personal', 'system' and 'ubuntu' menu. The personal menu: (perhaps using the username as name) [desktop apps that manage certain types of files (music -> rhythmbox, foto's -> fspot, email -> evolution, etc.)] ---------------------------------------- [nautilus bookmarks] --------------------------------------- [custom network locations] ----------------------------------------- [recent documents] ----------------------------------- - Preferences (control-center: all user-level preferences) ---------------------------------- - Log out .. The system menu: [storage devices] - CD/DVD Creator -------------------------- [printers] - Add Printer.. -------------------------- [available network connections, instead of network applet] -------------------------- [auto-discovered network shares like Samba, etc.] -------------------------------------------- - Administration.. (control-center: partition editor, network tools, restricted drivers, hardware-info) --------------------------------------------- - Shutdown.. The ubuntu menu: [application menus] ---------------------- - Report a problem.. - Help & About (submenu: help, about ubuntu, about gnome, ubuntu-forums, ubuntu-website) ------------------------- - Configuration (control-center: gconf-editor, synaptic, users/groups, time&date, software sources etc.) ------------------------ - Add/Remove.. For me, it just makes lots of sense to manage the menu like this, others may disagree. At least, and thats my main point here, it should have some consistent reasoning behind it. I tried to separate the hardware, the operating system and the user-level stuff. When you kick out the configuration applets out of the menu, why not kick more out of there? Why not do the same with the ordinary applications? At least do something _consistent_ // End of Half-baked Feature Suggestion // ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Wed Mar 21 03:04:04 2007 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.04 Uname: Linux Freezer 2.6.20-12-generic #2 SMP Sun Mar 18 03:07:14 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux ** Affects: control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- gnome-control-center mixes user-preferences and system-wide-configuration https://launchpad.net/bugs/94305 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
