I'd like to withdraw my statement that it works in Debian, which is _not_ true. Debians OO.o and gnomevfs (whichever is the problem) suffer from the same issue.
But, as stated above, gedit does open/save files on a sftp share if either owner or group has read permission, like one would expect it.
