I can't seem to get the problem to repeat...though I did quite alot of work on it last night.
Ended up reinstalling the nvidia-glx-legacy driver and spent a few hours googling for modelines for my monitor. Now that its all working, I can't get the damn thing to crash again. If I do get it to crash, I follow the valgrind instructions. On a side note, I did notice that I couldn't recompile the nvidia binary drivers at first because include/linux/config.h seems to be missing from my the 2.6.20 source package. Thanks for your help...I've been a linux user since 95 but nothing has even come close to Ubuntu...
