I've got the exact same problem, and the cause is exactly the same as well -- It happens because of symlinks from /usr/share/fonts to a different partition.
symlinking fonts to a different partition is quite harmless in my view, and Pango should not treat them any differently. Thus it is a bug that should be fixed.
