*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 21595 *** Edgy 6.10, same error message. To get round the problem I used a similar method to that in the Ubuntu forum, http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=76261 entry #7 by "Vaxis". Used preferences>keyboard to load US (English) layout, removed all other layouts, set US as default. Restarted, loaded UK layout and set as first/default. I can now change the keyboard settings with no error messages at log in.
