I re-enabled automatic login for my desktop, when went fine.

First Try: When tried switching to the other user the first time, the
screen went black, then displayed the nVidia splash screen, then went
black again, and finally brought me back to the same desktop as before.

Second Try: When I tried switching a second time, the screen went
black, then displayed the nVidia splash screen, then brought me to the
screensaver unlock dialog for the user automatically logged in
initially. I unlocked the desktop to try again.

Third Try: I went through the same steps as the Second Try, except this
time I clicked on the Switch User button instead of the Unlock button.
After clicking on the "Switch User" button, I was taken to a black
screen that had a dialog box in the center, where the other user was
displayed. I double-clicked on the other user to log in as them. The
screen went black and stayed black until I moved the mouse. When I
moved the mouse, I was at the same screensaver dialog box. This time, I
unlocked the desktop for the user who'd been automatically logged in.
