I had the same problem. I have installed the NVidia drivers and can only select my desired screen resolution through the nVidia settings app. Then it will be available in the display properties app. I think there is a conflict between these two apps and that may be a part of the problem. Also every time I reboot I have to reselect my screen resolution.
