There were two problems I think, the MTP device (Sony Walkman) is no longer handled by gvfs-gphoto2 probably due to a change in the udev rules or perhaps how the default case is handled when the device isn't recognized, and a bug that has been fixed in the PPA mentioned above that dealt with problems in the way in which the files were mapped to the local file system - I think it was showing numbers for filenames among other things.
