Public bug reported: Scenario:
You want to edit a text file, so you make a copy with a different name. Later, you want to remind yourself of what the original file said, so you find it and open it. What you expect to happen: Nautilus will use whatever magic numbers and casting of bones that it normally does to identify the type of file, see that it's a text file the same as any other, and open it using the default text editor. What actually happens: Nautilus throws up a lame error message that "There is no application installed for “backup file” files. Do you want to search for an application to open this file?" maintaining a database of file extensions like it's Windows 95. Ridiculous. It was significantly better than that in Gnome 2. Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1209401 Title: [Regression]File-type handling is retarded To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1209401/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
