I am seeing this problem in Ubuntu 12.10 with the Unity shell. The
buttons are white and the cleared spaces are a light gray. While not the
same color, they are similar enough to cause me problems.

After reading the comments above, I tried changing the Unity theme and
found that the two "High Contrast" themes gave me enough contrast to
play the game, but everything looked ugly. The other two available
themes, Ambience and Radiance, both had the original issue of white on
light gray. The styles mentioned above (Raleigh, QT, etc.) do not exist
in Unity, so I was not able to do that workaround.

I would like to suggest that, rather than using the theme/style colors
for the play area, that we be given the ability to set a color scheme
from a selection of schemes.
