I would have stayed with xfce4 but the last message I got from actionparsnip was:
ok run: sudo apt-get instal nvidia-current Then reboot, try both sessions after the reboot and after I did that none of the Gnome flavors changed (still no app tabs) and xfce4 didn't work anymore. So I gave up at that point and reloaded 12.10 but then I came up with a problem I had a couple of years ago with no wireless recognition. Because I am going away next week I had to give up on Ubuntu for now (after about 6-7 years) and use windoze to get my work done.
