I just bought an S3 today and I can verify that this is a problem on 12.04 LTS fully up to date.
If I mount the phone in PTP mode Rhythmbox won't see it, but if I mount it in MTP mode it shows up as "Media Player" above. Manually moving files to and from the device works just fine, but Rhythmbox will hang if you try to access it.
