Just experienced this in Edgy - Gparted, can confirm it makes things a bit of a pain.
Robert: If you're having problems (as i was) working with a USB disk, just change the setting in "System > Preferences > Removable Drives and Media" so that the box for "Mount removable drives when hotplugged" is un-checked.
