I have a slightly different problem but possibly with the same cause. (using 12.04 with all updates) If two accounts of the same name exist in two domains, no matter what is domain specified either via aaa\user or entering workgroup as aaa, it always uses one of the domains. i.e. specifying bbb\user still authenticates as aaa\user. An account which only exists in one domain seems to work as expected.
