Sebastien I just had the "great flash of insight" regarding the freeze- up problem I described above: it's switching virtual desktops (something I do a lot) that triggers it. Happens every time, and it doesn't matter if I switch using the keyboard or the switcher applet in Unity. Even clicking the icon for an open app in the Unity panel will trigger it.
Which package would you suggest I file a bug against for this?
